It’s a me, Mario!
Yesterday LEGO released a short teaser video on its social media channels showing a new LEGO collaboration with Super Mario. No details are available at this time but we took a few screen captures from the video to try to see what we can figure out. Scroll to the end of this blog post to watch the full video.
The video starts with a close up of a Mario figure. He doesn’t look very LEGO-like at first. He has what appears to be a video screen on his chest where a slot machine is spinning a very familiar question mark icon, with a very familiar ringing sound. Mario’s eyes and mouth have that same video screen quality.
As the video pans out slowly, you start to see hints of a few LEGO elements. For example, Mario has LEGO minifigure hands. Both his ears and the yellow buttons on his overalls could easily be 1×1 round tiles. Even his nose and mustache could perhaps be a new style of LEGO element. And Mario’s feet kind of resemble the feet from a LEGO Friends minifigure.
As the very short teaser video nears the end, the screen scrolls up and you can see that Mario is standing over (not directly on) a LEGO modified brick with masonry profile. And when you start to think about it, it’s uncanny how much the LEGO masonry bricks already resemble the blocks in Super Mario Bros.
So what do you think? Is LEGO introducing a new style of minifigure? Will the upcoming Super Mario sets have an electronic component to them? We have no insider knowledge of what LEGO may be planning, so we’ll be very interested to see if any of any of these clues become reality when the sets are revealed.
